Keeping Age At Bay With Antioxidants

While most of us may be able to imagine a day when we can look at ourselves in the mirror and proudly see our ‘happy lines’ as a reflection of a life filled with love and laughter, few of us want to exclaim “oh those deep furrows, wrinkles and sagging skin!” Let’s face it – there are lines and there are lines!

What are wrinkles?

As you age, your skin begins to lose elasticity, moisture and gradually becomes thinner. It also struggles to protect itself from the world around it – from chemicals to harsh weather conditions. So, it needs a little help and this is the moment where some resort to extreme measures like plastic surgery. But thank goodness, there is another way and it’s all about natural ingredients and the antioxidants living and breathing in those ingredients.

3. Stress Less! 

Easier said than done, right? But there are some things you can do to reduce stress including exercising. Once again choose something you’ll enjoy long-term. Manage your time better, introduce margins for your life. Give yourself wiggle room, space to relax and do things that you really love. And get some good quality sleep.

Which hand cream would you choose?

I normally avoid direct comparisons between brands of skincare because I don’t really believe in the principle of tearing other businesses down. But for goodness sake…when will we see the damage we are doing to our bodies through hidden (or not so hidden) dangerous chemicals?

To illustrate the vast difference between the safety of skincare products, we have created a direct ingredient comparison between Rubifresh (all natural) and Nutrimetics hand creams. Fresh is Best

Just as fresh food is best for our bodies, so too are fresh ingredients best for our skin. But WHY?

It is fairly well known that the fresher we eat our food (especially vitamin and mineral packed fruit & veg), the bigger the dose of those vits & minerals our bodies receive, and the better our bodies can process them due to their superior texture, moisture and flavour. This is not only about providing the body with essential nutrients to function, but also about building the body’s own ability to maintain itself in a healthy state. A fresh, healthy diet helps build immunity, protect against aging, increase energy so we can stay active, increase joint function and organ function, and a whole host of other cool things.

Our skin is no different. A healthy outer layer not only looks great and feels great, it also helps protect our bodies from nasties entering the bloodstream…creating a cycle where healthy skin maintains its own youthfulness.

Our skin is actually designed as our first line of defence, with many built in strategies for keeping nasties out, thereby doing its part in maintaining a healthy body. However, depending on a whole host of factors (chemical load, age of skin, temperature, enzymes, size of molecule, location on the skin and more) it has been shown that up to 60% of what we put on our skin ends up in the bloodstream. The obvious advice is therefore to only choose natural skincare products & ingredients that can help build both skin and ‘whole body’ health.

BASIC POST-WORKOUT SKINCARE ROUTINES

If exercise is good for us, we would assume it is good for our skin. However, if we do not replenish our skin post-exercise we risk minimising the effect of our exercise, and causing skin problems that could be prevented. With a few basic steps after our workout, we can ensure we match our skin-health to our healthy bodies.

Exercise increases circulation, which in turn improves the appearance of our skin, and aids detoxification and cell renewal – a natural anti-aging benefit. Perspiration helps maintain our body temperature, and stress-releasing exercise such as yoga helps smooth fine lines by encouraging the muscles of the face to relax. For some people, exercise can also aggravate skin conditions if there is a build-up of bacteria, clogged sweat glands or chafing and redness. We need to keep pores unclogged, skin free of bacteria & chemicals, and effectively cleanse our faces after our workout, to reap the benefits of exercise for our skin.

During exercise, our bodies release toxins which can build up as a result of lifestyle factors such as environmental pollution, food additives, smoking, alcohol consumption and chemically laden personal care products. Many of these toxins are released through our skin as we perspire. If we do not wash our faces after exercise, the moisture in our sweat evaporates and we are left with toxin-laden salts on our skin. These can cause irritations and blockages in our pores, and intensify the dehydration caused by exercise. Straight after exercise, splash your face with lukewarm water to wash off surface dirt and perspiration, and help cool the body. The colder the water, the more your body will think it needs to hold onto the heat, so lukewarm water is best for helping the body release the heat.

But water alone will not remove the oil based dirt and toxins trapped in the skin’s oily layer. Follow your water wash with a gentle facial cleanser to wash the toxins away, loosen the dead skin cells, and leave clean pores which can breathe, and maximise the effectiveness of our exercise. The most effective way to cleanse is using a cleansing oil. Most commercial cleansers contain surfactants which strip the skin of its natural oils and upset its pH. This can often irritate the skin and actually cause the skin to produce more oil. Soapy, foamy products do not cleanse more effectively, they just indicate a harsh product.  Oil cleansing most effectively removes grime and makeup from deep within pores, and doesn’t strip the skin of vital moisture. Cleansing oils help the skin regulate its sebum production, helping manage the oiliness of the skin. Choose a cleansing oil that contains drawing oils such as olive oil, as well as oils which nourish and replenish the skin.

As exercise increases circulation, it also aids our skin’s shedding process. As we age, our skin needs a little help getting rid of the dead skin cells. A cleanser will start to loosen dead skin cells, but an exfoliator is needed to fully remove these cells. Follow gentle cleansing with an equally gentle face scrub to remove the dead skin cells and reveal a fresh, smooth complexion. Always scrub gently and in a circular motion, and use every 2-3 days (not every day). Scrubbing too vigorously or too frequently can cause too many layers to be ‘rubbed off’, and this can lead to breakouts and irritations.

And finally, rehydrate! Our bodies are predominantly water, and a vast proportion of this is held in the skin. Moisture in our skin performs a number of functions, including a protective barrier, a vehicle for vitamin/mineral transport, and holding the shape (and plumpness) of our skin. During exercise we lose a large amount of water through perspiration. When our skin is dehydrated, it encourages fine lines and wrinkles to form, and skin to sag. Choose a light natural moisturiser that still allows your skin to breathe, and ideally, if you have very dry skin, use a super-hydrating serum under your moisturiser for extra hydration and protection.

So it’s quite simple: cleanse, exfoliate, rehydrate for beautiful post-exercise skin health!

Terrific Tea Tree

tea treeTea Tree oil has long been used as a natural antiseptic, but is gathering interest due to some new research that highlights additional benefits.

Pure tea tree oil comes from the leaves of the tea tree plant (not the tea plant…though it was used by 18th century sailors to make tea that smelled like nutmeg). Today, it is a natural essential oil used straight, or in skincare preparations, for it’s anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-infammatory actions.

Tea tree oil should never be swallowed as it is too strong for the gut lining, and can cause rashes, stomach ache, diarrhoea, vomiting or even hallucinations.

Recent research reveals it’s potential in the control of Golden Staph, and in the significant inhibition of the growth of highly agressive cancer tumours in mice.

All that said, much of this research is in it’s early days, but what we do know is it’s powerful cleansing and anti-inflammatory properties in skincare formulations. If you are so inclined grab some olive oil (great for cleansing) and a few drops of tea tree oil, and make a homemade cleanser. The Truth about Coconuts

coconutCoconut oil was once considered a baddie due to its high percentage of saturated fat. In recent years, evidence has emerged to show not only that saturated fats are not the baddie they once were thought to be, but the unique combination of fatty acids in coconut oil actually have powerful medicinal properties, due to the fact that they are metabolised differently. In short, they go straight to the liver from the digestive tract to provide a quick source of energy that can have therapeutic effects on some brain disorders like epilepsy.

Scientific studies have shown a variety of other health benefits of coconut oil, including improving blood cholesterol, boosting brain function, reducing the risk of seizures, preventing infections, easing digestion, stimulating metabolism, helping burn fat and killing your hunger. All really amazing stuff (and by the way, it tastes great too).

Olive Oil for Cleansing

Did you know that the very best form of cleansing is based on a staple ingredient in our pantries? Despite what we are lead to believe about cleansing the skin, using natural vegetable and nut oils for cleansing is one of the best things you can do for your skin, and Olive oil is a fabulous place to start.

Oil  cleansing has been used in many countries for centuries as a recognised facial cleansing method. Natural oils, when rubbed in, dissolve impurities, environmental ‘dirt’ and makeup, that are all trapped within the oily pores, while providing essential nourishment for the skin. Even oily skins respond well to oil cleansing, because when rubbed into the skin, the oils trick the sebaceous glands into believing they have produced enough oil, and they stop producing an excess.  Oil based cleansers will also not aggravate acne or cause new outbreaks because they are very gentle on the skin. Olive oil has a special drawing action, drawing impurities out of the skin.

Ideally, at night, after the face has been exposed to the grime of the day, we should double cleanse, which involves an oil cleanse first, followed by a light, natural cleanser without sulfates or harsh chemicals, and without animal fats. This can either be a vegetable based cleansing bar, or a cleansing gel which penetrates easily to purify the skin deep down and provide other nourishment the skin needs.

Then in the morning, all we need to do is either wash our face with warm water, or give it a light cleanse with our cleansing gel. Squeaky clean, but not stripped dry!

Above all, remember that intense cleansing or scrubbing can worsen skin conditions such as acne and inflammation, and expose the skin to unwanted bacteria.
