The eyes have it – wonderful cucumber!

11 Jul

Known for centuries to reduce eye puffiness, cucumber has so many health benefits for both skin and body. Let’s explore some of those benefits.

Cucumis Sativus – the humble cucumber. High in fibre and super high in water content (about 96%), cucumber in the diet can help the digestive system work more efficiently, and….well….get things moving!

But what we really love here at Rubifresh skincare is its magic abilities for improving the health of our skin. Cucumber is rich in Vit C, which is a very powerful antioxidant, increasing collagen and elastin production, and hence, smoothing out the skin. The ascorbic acid and caffeic acid reduce water retention, and this is why cucumber has been used for centuries to reduce eye puffiness. And if that wasn’t enough to get you excited, it’s antioxidant and natural silica content helps fade dark circles around the eyes.

As we know, cucumber is easy to come by and worth using fresh on the eyes or in the diet, but if you want to experience the combined benefits of the lovely cucumber and it’s anti-aging partners in crime, grab a luxurious all-natural Rubifresh Eye Gel for an on the go anti-aging refresher. Find it here.

Terrific Tea Tree

28 Nov

tea treeTea Tree oil has long been used as a natural antiseptic, but is gathering interest due to some new research that highlights additional benefits.

Pure tea tree oil comes from the leaves of the tea tree plant (not the tea plant…though it was used by 18th century sailors to make tea that smelled like nutmeg). Today, it is a natural essential oil used straight, or in skincare preparations, for it’s anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-infammatory actions.

Tea tree oil should never be swallowed as it is too strong for the gut lining, and can cause rashes, stomach ache, diarrhoea, vomiting or even hallucinations.

Recent research reveals it’s potential in the control of Golden Staph, and in the significant inhibition of the growth of highly agressive cancer tumours in mice.

All that said, much of this research is in it’s early days, but what we do know is it’s powerful cleansing and anti-inflammatory properties in skincare formulations. If you are so inclined grab some olive oil (great for cleansing) and a few drops of tea tree oil, and make a homemade cleanser. If you can’t be bothered, and want the real deal, try our Rubifresh Cleansing Oil, which contains both olive oil, and lemon tea tree plus a whole bunch of other cleansing and nourishing oils to deep cleanse and rebalance the skin for the ultimate (not stripped dry) squeaky clean.

THRIFTY THURSDAY – goodness of goat’s milk

22 Nov

Yum! Goat’s Milk!

One of the most gentle conditioning and moisturizing ingredients you could put on your skin….and available from the supermarket or health food store.

Goat’s milk has smaller protein molecules, making it easily and quickly absorbed, and imparting a beautiful silky feel to the skin. It is not too alkaline and not too acidic, making it very gentle, and ideal for very dry skin – it is especially well known for fighting and treating serious skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, and it’s high content of lactic acid makes it a perfect moisturizer!

Goat’s milk can also serve as a gentle but effective exfoliant. After skin is treated with goat’s milk, old skin cells easily slough off. To aid in the process, you can add some baking soda and mix to a paste.

Using goat’s milk in beauty treatments is nothing new. It’s one of those oldies but goodies dating back to biblical times. Just as honey and olive oil, goat milk is a great old time ingredient to keep in your beauty arsenal.

Rubifresh Weekly Face Mask contains real goat’s milk powder, and is available at http://rubifresh.com.au/test-category-1/sub-category-1/weekly-face-mask.html for $39. A great pampering gift for Christmas!

TUESDAY TIPS – hungry for hydration

13 Nov

I love water!

I love drinking it. I love my showers (really hot in winter!). I love swimming in it. I’ve always loved running under the sprinkler (though I did break my nose doing this when I was a kid). I love the rain…..and I know my skin loves water too.

Hydration is one of the best anti-aging habits you can get into – both inside and out.

Our bodies comprise up to 80% water, depending on our age. As we get older, this percentage decreases, and it affects many of our bodily functions as well as our skin. The skin’s surface is able to be kept soft and moist by sebum (all the oily stuff) and a natural moisturising factor (NMF – all the watery stuff).

The role of sebum is basically to form a film that protects our skin from moisture loss. NMF is a mixture of water, amino acids, lactic acid and other minerals that keep the skin moist and supple by attracting and holding water. The water content of the skin’s outer layer is around 30%, and this rises after treatment with certain humectants, such as hyaluronic acid, that boosts the skin’s ability to hold water. The fats/oils within the skin help to preserve this high water content, and provide a waterproof barrier that prevents water loss.

As we age, the skin loses some of it’s intercelluar lipids, and hence, gets drier as the water in our skin evaporates more readily. It is important to drink lots of water (advice varies from 1 – 2L/day) to keep our bodies and skin hydrated from the inside, but also to boost our skins ability to hold onto the water, with ingredients such as hyauronic acid. Rubifresh Anti-aging Moisturiser, Hydrating Body Gel, Eye Gel and 3 anti-aging serums all contain natural hyaluronic acid. You can check them out at http://rubifresh.com.au/test-category-1/

But just as important, is a good barrier to prevent moisture loss. That’s the role of creams, as opposed to gels. A natural moisturiser will protect the skin from moisture loss, and still allow the skin to breathe and carry on it’s normal functions.

So remember….

i) drink lots of water to hydrat from the inside

ii) choose products with boosted humectants such as hyaluronic acid

iii) complete the routine with a good natural moisturiser to protect the skin from moisture loss

When we think of caring for our skin, it is easy to focus on it’s role in communicating our age. Let’s face it, none of us wants to look older than we are! The skin’s role is multi-faceted, providing sensory inputs, emotional expressions, and the more functional roles of protecting us from nasties getting into our bodies, and good things from escaping. Here are some key facts about how the skin works and how best to care for it.

The skin’s natural pH is around 5-5.5 – slightly acidic – forming an ‘acid mantle’ which allows the survival of ‘good bacteria’ on the surface of the skin, protecting it from pathogens. For this reason, if we use harsh soaps and cleansers (many of which are strongly alkali), we not only dehydrate the skin, but we also strip away the acidic protection and open the skin up to nasties which can cause irritation and damage. Always choose skincare products that are pH balanced to maintain this protection. (All Rubifresh products have been created according to this principle).

One of the functions of the skin is the excretion of toxins. It is our largest organ – with a total surface area of about 1.8m2 in an adult. Unhealthy diets, lack of exercise and poor skincare routines can all play a part in clogging the skin and reducing its ability to eliminate toxins. Keeping our skin clean and healthy assists this process, and the best way to do this is to regularly cleanse (preferably with oil – see our previous blog post on oil cleansing). Rubifresh Cleansing Oil is a combination of oils that cleanse and draw dirt out of the skin, and oils that nourish.

The skin naturally regenerates itself to maintain a fresh, healthy outer surface, and bright complexion. When we are young, the skin renews itself every 2-4 weeks, shedding dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. As we age, this process slows, so that in our 40s and 50s it can take more like 60days. This is partly why older skin tends to look duller and less ‘fresh’. So our skin needs some help, and exfoliating using a gentle scrub is how we remove these dead skin cells, allowing the bodies own anti-aging processes to do their work. Beware of harsh granules and too much scrubbing. Use a gentle (preferably natural) scrub every 2-3 days. The Rubifresh range includes both a men’s and a women’s Daily Face Scrub, both of which are created on a moisturising base to minimise dryness, and contain natural exfoliating granules which are gentle to the skin.

Today there are some really effective, well-researched natural active ingredients that can nourish, moisturise, hydrate, smooth, lighten the skin and so much more. We know through scientific evidence that many of the chemicals we have traditionally used on our skin can cause serious harm – many of them have now been associated with various forms of skin irritation or cancer. Most natural ingredients which have been approved for use in skincare will not only avoid these potential risks, but will nourish your skin and help it to build it’s own anti-aging defenses. It’s not unlike how we manage our diets. How amazing, if we can help the skin maintain it’s own youthfulness! Look for natural products which contain some good oils (such as avocado, macadamia, camellia, jojoba etc) and active ingredients. Rubifresh uses natural actives that are documented to smooth fine lines, super-hydrate, depuff and lighten the skin. Look for these active ingredients across our range.

While gels and serums are important for penetration of active ingredients, cream based products (lotions, creams, moisturisers) are important for keeping the good stuff in. A cream will form a barrier to prevent moisture loss, and along with this, will help the skin perform it’s other function of controlling the loss of salts, hormones and other precious nutrients. Choose a natural moisturiser with the consistency/richness that is right for your skin. Some prefer a richer texture, others a lighter consistency. The Rubifresh range includes a men’s and a women’s natural moisturiser, lighter in texture (though a rich night cream is coming!), with anti-aging ingredients that have been documented to smooth fine lines and super-hydrate dry skin.

Many chemical or synthetic cosmetic ingredients are now well documented for their association and risk of skin irritation, damage and cancer. We can no longer ignore such evidence, especially when it is not necessarily the most effective route to youthfulness and skin health anyway. Testimonials spontaneously received from Rubifresh customers demonstrate a wide variety of skin benefits, almost immediately. Some of these include better skin tone, more even skin colour, absence of dryness, reduced fine lines, and the ‘healing’ of ecsema and other skin irritations. There is proof! Natural is better for your skin, better for your overall heath, and better for the planet!

Despite all-natural ingredients, and well formulated quality products, some skincare will not feel right for your skin. You need to test and trial products to see how YOUR skin reacts, and choose what’s right for you. Rubifresh offers a ‘Trial Pack’ which contains a generous sample size of each product in the women’s range so you can try risk free. It contains $160 worth of product and sells for only $99, so it’s a small price to pay to see what works on your skin without huge commitments and wasted products in your bathroom cabinet.
