Whether you’re a night owl or an early bird, getting enough sleep can really impact your health… including the youthful appearance of your skin! We all know what it’s like when we haven’t had enough sleep; those dreaded dark puffy circles under the old eyes, the short temper, the low energy.

Yes, sleep can really make or break your day and not just when it comes to your mood. The term ‘beauty sleep’ isn’t just a clever way to get youngsters to go to bed earlier, it’s actually based on real facts and it’s all to do with keeping age at bay naturally.

Sleep & Youthful Skin – the Facts!

  1. The Human Growth Hormone is responsible for keeping us looking young and sprightly and this hormone really goes to work when we’re asleep – especially in our slow wave sleep cycle.
  2. We actually develop more skin while we’re asleep! This helps us renew and rejuvenate our skin increasing its youthfulness.
  3. ‘Stratum Corneum’ works in two ways; as the skin’s barrier to moisture loss and a defence system against bacterial invasion. When we don’t have enough sleep, the Stratum Corneum struggles to provide that barrier, leading to moisture loss, dehydration and skin that’s susceptible to breakouts.

Other Health Benefits

Besides providing incredible benefits for skin, sleep also allows time and space for our bodies to heal. This means quicker healing for your body and less injuries and illnesses long-term.

Sleep can also make you smarter! That’s right, our mind and body learn and remember new things when we’re asleep. A rested brain is one that is ready for action once you’re awake, not sluggish and cloudy like a brain deprived of zzz’s.

Finally, a lack of sleep over a period of time leads to slow and steady weight gain. Not only is your body missing out on vital rest time but you have more time to be tempted by a midnight snack… or two!

How to Get More Sleep

Sleep is such an easy way to maintain youthful looking skin naturally. It’s often the simple things in life that are most effective and this is one of them. But if you’re one of those people that find it hard to go to bed early or to get to sleep, we have a few handy tips to ease you into dreamland…

  • Enjoy a lovely warm herbal tea before bedtime
  • Banish screens from your bedroom and make sure you have screen-free time before you go to bed.
  • Use the awesome Rescue Remedy Sleep Formula – works like a charm!
  • Try herbal supplements like Valerian that won’t make you feel groggy when you wake up in the morning.

What are your favourite natural sleep remedies?

Keeping Age At Bay With Antioxidants

4 Jul

While most of us may be able to imagine a day when we can look at ourselves in the mirror and proudly see our ‘happy lines’ as a reflection of a life filled with love and laughter, few of us want to exclaim “oh those deep furrows, wrinkles and sagging skin!” Let’s face it – there are lines and there are lines!

What are wrinkles?

As you age, your skin begins to lose elasticity, moisture and gradually becomes thinner. It also struggles to protect itself from the world around it – from chemicals to harsh weather conditions. So, it needs a little help and this is the moment where some resort to extreme measures like plastic surgery. But thank goodness, there is another way and it’s all about natural ingredients and the antioxidants living and breathing in those ingredients.

What are Antioxidants?

These superheroes protect your skin’s cells from Oxidative Stress! Say, what? Ok, so Oxidative Stress happens when Free Radicals (sounds cool but they’re really NOT) go rampaging around your body causing all kinds of chaos including cell damage. So to counteract this mayhem, we top up our Antioxidants which actually reverse damage and help new cells to grow.

What this means for our skin is that Antioxidants can reverse the signs of aging! In practical terms if you apply products with Antioxidants on board, your skin will become firmer, there will be fewer wrinkles, inflammation and scarring will be reduced and your immune system will be on fire… in a good way.

4 Ways to Fight Free Radicals

1. Healthy Diet

This ticks so many boxes. Not only great for your skin but your whole body will be loving you once you tweak the way you eat. Think about…

  • Reducing processed food
  • Eat fresh fruit and veggies
  • Loads of colour – eat a rainbow!
  • Reduce preservatives/additives

Make it delicious so the change is permanent. No one likes a boring salad! Make it sing by adding nuts, orange pieces or a healthy homemade dressing.

2. Reduce Toxins

Find out which chemicals are simply not necessary. Do your research, there’s heaps of natural tips out there on the internet. Try an aluminium-free deodorant or restrict your exposure to UV Rays or X Rays. Avoid smoking and pollutants where you can!

3. Stress Less!

Easier said than done, right? But there are some things you can do to reduce stress including exercising. Once again choose something you’ll enjoy long-term. Manage your time better, introduce margins for your life. Give yourself wiggle room, space to relax and do things that you really love. And get some good quality sleep.

4. Antioxidants

There’s our superheroes again. Eat and apply your antioxidants every day and you’ll notice the difference. Make sure there’s a variety of these beauties. Why? Read on…

Antioxidant Combinations

On their own, Antioxidants are pretty good but to give them a turbo boost, you need to combine forces. Each Antioxidant impacts the body differently, so combining them will attack those rebellious Free Radicals from all angles, working together to fight those dreaded signs of aging.

We live in a world full of toxins – you just can’t escape them, so this kind of external help is more than necessary to give your skin a healthy, natural glow and reverse those premature wrinkles and fine lines that we all try to avoid.

To make it super-easy, we’ve done all the hard work for you. All Rubifresh products are packed with the right balance of Antioxidants so all you have to do is apply them. And as you layer one product over another, you get the synergistic effect of a variety of antioxidants all working together to manage the aging process. Too easy!

Fresh is Best

24 Nov

Just as fresh food is best for our bodies, so too are fresh ingredients best for our skin. But WHY?

It is fairly well known that the fresher we eat our food (especially vitamin and mineral packed fruit & veg), the bigger the dose of those vits & minerals our bodies receive, and the better our bodies can process them due to their superior texture, moisture and flavour. This is not only about providing the body with essential nutrients to function, but also about building the body’s own ability to maintain itself in a healthy state. A fresh, healthy diet helps build immunity, protect against aging, increase energy so we can stay active, increase joint function and organ function, and a whole host of other cool things.

Our skin is no different. A healthy outer layer not only looks great and feels great, it also helps protect our bodies from nasties entering the bloodstream…creating a cycle where healthy skin maintains its own youthfulness.

Our skin is actually designed as our first line of defence, with many built in strategies for keeping nasties out, thereby doing its part in maintaining a healthy body. However, depending on a whole host of factors (chemical load, age of skin, temperature, enzymes, size of molecule, location on the skin and more) it has been shown that up to 60% of what we put on our skin ends up in the bloodstream. The obvious advice is therefore to only choose natural skincare products & ingredients that can help build both skin and ‘whole body’ health.

The other important factor, however, is FRESHNESS. Natural ingredients used at their freshest help load up the skin with maximum skin-loving vitamins and minerals (many of which come with great scientific evidence), as well as helping to build the skin’s ability to maintain its own youthfulness.

Get some freshness and feel the difference today!

Slowing down the aging process with antioxidants

10 Feb

ImageWe’ve probably all heard of free radicals and their harmful effects on the body’s aging process, but what does it really mean and how can we prevent the damage? Free radicals are damaged cells which are released when oxygen is processed by the body in the natural process called oxidation (the same occurs when you cut an apple and oxygen reacts to turn it brown), and they cause changes in those cells they touch (eg they die – like with rotting fruit, or they might produce new cells to heal a cut). Because free radicals are missing a critical molecule, they go on a rampage to hook up and become complete. In the process, they damage the DNA of cells they touch, which creates the seed of disease. External toxins are free radical generators, speeding up the process of damage.

ANTIOXIDANTS TO THE RESCUE!!!!

Normal cell functions produce free radicals that are kept under control by antioxidants in the foods we eat, but this is not enough to combat the toxins we are exposed to from the external environment – especially if you smoke, drink, or are exposed to sun, pesticides or pollution (OK, so that would be most of us!).

THE 3 BEST WAYS TO BUILD YOUR ANTIOXIDANT STORES

1. FRESH HEALTHY FOOD

Colourful fruits and veges containing beta-carotene, Vit C or Vit E (eg purple, red, blue, orange or yellow fruits/veges) as well as foods containing zinc (oysters (yum!), poultry, red meat, beans, nuts, seafood, grains, dairy) and selenium (red meat, poultry, grains, nuts). And best not to overcook them!

2. VITAMIN/MINERAL SUPPLEMENTS

If you’ re not getting adequate from your diet, or you exercise a lot, you may need to supplement your diet with a good Zinc+C or similar. Great idea to talk to your naturopath about this.

3. ANTIOXIDANT RICH SKINCARE

Oh yes, you knew there’d be a skincare angle! Free radicals are a big factor in the premature aging process as the skin tries to battle both the environmental stresses and the free radicals it is exposed to. It is reported that your skin absorbs up to 70-80% of what you put on it (depending on the source of data), so topically applied antioxidants are really critical for your skin to build it’s resistance to environmental stresses and damage, and to supplement the antioxidant protection that good food can provide. There are several well-documented antioxidant ingredients for skincare, but at Rubifresh Natural Skincare, we use pomegranate oil and natural Vit E in almost every product. You can search for them in the ingredients on our website here.

COMING SOON…

We are feverishly developing a range of Premium Facial Treatment Oils, one of which will be an ultra rich antioxidant booster, containing green tea and grape seed, along with our usual heroes – Vit E, pomegranate. If you are keen to try, and to keep up to date with launches and specials, join our facebook page or sign up on our website.

The Magic of Chamomile

5 Nov

If someone asked you the question – “what is chamomile good for?”, you’d probably say that it is good for relaxing you before bed. You would, of course, be correct, but do you know why, and did you know that it’s benefits go way beyond bringing on sleep? It’s powerful benefits have encouraged us at Rubifresh Skincare to include it as an ingredient in several of our products. Read on to find out more…

Chamomile has been used since ancient times by the Egyptians (as a fever reducer) and by the Greeks (as an ulcer cure). It is a flowering plant which looks like a tiny sunflower, but is mostly white. It’s active substances are many.

Now, I happen to be a big fan of chamomile tea. As a bit of a…thinker…I often find it difficult to get sleepy, so each night I have my cup of chamomile tea and it really does seem to make a difference. Not everyone agrees, however there seems to be good evidence to support this herbal gem. In two studies published in 2009 (“Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology”), and in 2012 (“Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine” journal), chamomile was found to significantly reduce the symptoms of stress and anxiety (by up to 50%) and lift the mood, as measured on a depression scale. Chamomile contains an active ingredient called APIGENIN, a flavonoid (antioxidants which can guard against health conditions). Apigenin binds to the ‘tranquilizer’ cells within our bodies, which help relax muscles and mildly sedate us.

It’s other benefits include reducing inflammation in the body by inhibiting the release of inflammatory prostaglandins from the white blood cells. This has the effect of reducing inflammation, promoting regrowth of new tisue, and increasing collagen production. You can see the link with natural skincare and anti-aging benefits.  Aging is largely caused by inflammation in the body/skin. There are many triggers to this inflammation, including sun exposure, smoking, drinking, poor diet stress and so on. Chamomile as an ingredient in skincare products, acts to reduce inflammation and assist in the anti-aging process. One of the products we use it in at Rubifresh is in the Men’s After Shave Gel, as a skin calming (anti-inflammatory) ingredient.

Other studies have shown chamomile to be beneficial for improving immune function, healing skin rashes and infections, relieving headaches, and in the possible prevention of cancer. While I am skeptical about the cancer link, the active ingredient APIGENIN has been shown to limit the growth of cancer cells and reduce blood flow to those cells. You never know.

WELCOME TO FESTIVAL OF FRESH 2014! TO ANSWER THE SPECIAL QUESTION FOR A CHANCE TO WIN SOME BEAUTIFUL (FREE) PRODUCT, GO TO THE CONTACT US TAB ON OUR WEBSITE.

When we set out to develop our range of natural skincare products (find us at http://www.rubifresh.com.au), we not only committed to exclude any ingredients that were not 100% naturally derived, but also to exclude ingredients with long, complicated names. WHY? Because we believe that keeping your skin youthful, beautiful and healthy should not be difficult or confusing, or complicated with claims you cannot understand.

So let’s have a look at some of our amazing ingredients, to see where they come from and what they do…

HYALURONIC ACID – naturally present in human skin & joints, but is depleted as we age. It’s main job in the skin is to transport nourishment to the outer layers of the skin, and to eliminate waste. It also plays a role in helping regulate the life cycle of skin cells. It can absorb 1000x it’s weight in water, making it a super-hydrating ingredient for skincare products. Our HA is plant derived and GMO free.

BETA VULGARIS (BEET) ROOT EXTRACT – In our formulations where a high level of moisturisation/hydration is required, beetroot extract is used alongside hydrolised corn starch, as part of a powerful active ingredient complex. It’s purpose is to provide the skin with the necessary moisturisation to maintain it’s smoothness and suppleness. It has been shown in objective studies to strongly elevate the concentration of the skin’s own Natural Moisturising Factors (which maintain high levels of hydration in the outer layers of the skin), and to maintain a higher level of moisturisation of the skin even after 24hrs.

BELLIS PERENNIS (DAISY) FLOWER EXTRACT – This is not a commonly found ingredient in skincare, but is used in our Pigmentation Serum, and our Hand Cream for it’s skin lightening action, and effectiveness at resolving hyperpigmentation and age spots. It works at two levels – firstly, it reduces the activity and synthesis of tyrosinase (the precursor to melanin) and the concentration of endothelin, also involved in the production of melanin, and therefore skin pigmentation. It is combined with two other powerful plant extracts with lightening actions – licorice root and acerola berry.

PANICUM MILIACEUM (MILLET) SEED EXTRACT – Used in our anti-aging formulations alongside tannic acid (from the oak tree), as a powerful active ingredient which works on fine lines and wrinkles. It’s dual action promotes the production of collagen (elastic tissue), and provides a taughtening effect at the surface. Human studies show this active complex leads to a visible improvement in the skin’s microstructure (23%), and a decrease in the depth of wrinkles (10%).
