The eyes have it – wonderful cucumber!

11 Jul

Cucumber

Known for centuries to reduce eye puffiness, cucumber has so many health benefits for both skin and body. Let’s explore some of those benefits.

Cucumis Sativus – the humble cucumber. High in fibre and super high in water content (about 96%), cucumber in the diet can help the digestive system work more efficiently, and….well….get things moving!

But what we really love here at Rubifresh skincare is its magic abilities for improving the health of our skin. Cucumber is rich in Vit C, which is a very powerful antioxidant, increasing collagen and elastin production, and hence, smoothing out the skin. The ascorbic acid and caffeic acid reduce water retention, and this is why cucumber has been used for centuries to reduce eye puffiness. And if that wasn’t enough to get you excited, it’s antioxidant and natural silica content helps fade dark circles around the eyes.

As we know, cucumber is easy to come by and worth using fresh on the eyes or in the diet, but if you want to experience the combined benefits of the lovely cucumber and it’s anti-aging partners in crime, grab a luxurious all-natural Rubifresh Eye Gel for an on the go anti-aging refresher. Find it here.

Keeping Age At Bay With Antioxidants

4 Jul

While most of us may be able to imagine a day when we can look at ourselves in the mirror and proudly see our ‘happy lines’ as a reflection of a life filled with love and laughter, few of us want to exclaim “oh those deep furrows, wrinkles and sagging skin!” Let’s face it – there are lines and there are lines!

What are wrinkles?

As you age, your skin begins to lose elasticity, moisture and gradually becomes thinner. It also struggles to protect itself from the world around it – from chemicals to harsh weather conditions. So, it needs a little help and this is the moment where some resort to extreme measures like plastic surgery. But thank goodness, there is another way and it’s all about natural ingredients and the antioxidants living and breathing in those ingredients.

What are Antioxidants?

These superheroes protect your skin’s cells from Oxidative Stress! Say, what? Ok, so Oxidative Stress happens when Free Radicals (sounds cool but they’re really NOT) go rampaging around your body causing all kinds of chaos including cell damage. So to counteract this mayhem, we top up our Antioxidants which actually reverse damage and help new cells to grow.

What this means for our skin is that Antioxidants can reverse the signs of aging! In practical terms if you apply products with Antioxidants on board, your skin will become firmer, there will be fewer wrinkles, inflammation and scarring will be reduced and your immune system will be on fire… in a good way.

4 Ways to Fight Free Radicals

1. Healthy Diet

This ticks so many boxes. Not only great for your skin but your whole body will be loving you once you tweak the way you eat. Think about…

  • Reducing processed food
  • Eat fresh fruit and veggies
  • Loads of colour – eat a rainbow!
  • Reduce preservatives/additives

Make it delicious so the change is permanent. No one likes a boring salad! Make it sing by adding nuts, orange pieces or a healthy homemade dressing.

2. Reduce Toxins

Find out which chemicals are simply not necessary. Do your research, there’s heaps of natural tips out there on the internet. Try an aluminium-free deodorant or restrict your exposure to UV Rays or X Rays. Avoid smoking and pollutants where you can!

3. Stress Less!

Easier said than done, right? But there are some things you can do to reduce stress including exercising. Once again choose something you’ll enjoy long-term. Manage your time better, introduce margins for your life. Give yourself wiggle room, space to relax and do things that you really love. And get some good quality sleep.

4. Antioxidants

There’s our superheroes again. Eat and apply your antioxidants every day and you’ll notice the difference. Make sure there’s a variety of these beauties. Why? Read on…

Antioxidant Combinations

On their own, Antioxidants are pretty good but to give them a turbo boost, you need to combine forces. Each Antioxidant impacts the body differently, so combining them will attack those rebellious Free Radicals from all angles, working together to fight those dreaded signs of aging.

We live in a world full of toxins – you just can’t escape them, so this kind of external help is more than necessary to give your skin a healthy, natural glow and reverse those premature wrinkles and fine lines that we all try to avoid.

To make it super-easy, we’ve done all the hard work for you. All Rubifresh products are packed with the right balance of Antioxidants so all you have to do is apply them. And as you layer one product over another, you get the synergistic effect of a variety of antioxidants all working together to manage the aging process. Too easy!

More from Rubifresh:

Which hand cream would you choose?

10 Aug

I normally avoid direct comparisons between brands of skincare because I don’t really believe in the principle of tearing other businesses down. But for goodness sake…when will we see the damage we are doing to our bodies through hidden (or not so hidden) dangerous chemicals?

To illustrate the vast difference between the safety of skincare products, we have created a direct ingredient comparison between Rubifresh (all natural) and Nutrimetics hand creams. This is absolutely NOT about putting down Nutrimetics. In fact over the years I have loved that brand. It is about exposing the dangerous ingredients that find their way into our bodies, and questioning whether we should be willing to continue to flood our bodies with these harmful chemicals.

Rubifresh Hand Cream Ingredients:

Purified water, Coconut oil, Cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate (an emulsifier made from olives), Glycerine (vegetable), Camellia seed oil, Shea butter (certified organic), Cocoa butter, Betaine (from sugar beet), Avocado oil, Pomegranate oil, Tocopherol (natural vitamin E), Calendula oil, Raspberry seed oil, Licorice root extract, Bellis perennis flower extract, Aloe vera leaf extract (certified organic), Xanthan gum (a natural sugar derived from corn), Citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil, Mentha spicata (spearmint) leaf oil, Parfum (natural)

Nutrimetics Hand Cream Ingredients:

Water, Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, Butylene glycol*

*Butylene glycol easily penetrates skin and weakens protein and cellular structure. It can cause skin irritation, dermatitis and hives from too many mast skin cells.  Repeated exposure may also lead to sensitivity or skin allergies.  Once an allergic reaction occurs, the body’s immune system remembers the invader and will react negatively each time it comes in contact with the substance. The California Environmental Protection Agency warns against excessive contact as it may have effects including brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.

Glyceryl stearate, Peg 100 stearate*

*PEGs can be contaminated with measurable amounts of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies ethylene oxide as a known human carcinogen and 1,4-dioxane as a possible human carcinogen. Ethylene oxide can also harm the nervous system and the California Environmental Protection Agency has classified it as a developmental toxicant based on evidence that it may interfere with human development. Other common concerns include: reproductive disorders, carcinogen contamination, proven cancer risk, endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity, and skin irritation.

Cetearyl alcohol, Cetyl alcohol*

*Possible eye, lung, and skin irritant

Cetearyl ethylhexanoate, Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, Dimethicone*

*Possible eye, lung, and skin irritant

Tocopheryl acetate, Calendula officinalis flower extract, Algae extract, Chondrus crispus (carrageenan), Fucus vesiculosus extract, Algin, Commiphora abyssinica extract, Arnica montana flower extract, Panthenol, Sorbitol, Glycerine, Polysorbate 20*

*Polysorbate starts out as harmless sorbitol, but then it’s treated with carcinogenic ethylene oxide

Carbomer, Trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate, Methylparaben*, Ethylparaben*

*Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors. Associated with breast cancer

Diazolidinyl urea, Sodium hydroxide*

*A powerful alkali used in industry for cleaning drains and pipe lines also used in oven cleaners. Known as caustic soda. Workers exposed to steam containing sodium hydroxide have suffered lung damage and an increased risk of throat cancer.

Fragrance, Citral, Geraniol, Hexyl cinnamal, Limonene, linalool

So just like food ingredients, we need to be paying more attention to the safety of our skincare ingredients. You can find every ingredient listed on our website under each Rubifresh product listing – nothing but naturally derived nourishing ingredients to build skin health. Make the change to natural today. The health of your skin (and your body) depends on it.

Manage eczema and psoriasis naturally

6 Jul

No, this is not just a pretty flower I picked from my garden. It is Calendula officinalis, or the humble marigold. In the garden its bright and summery and pretty, but on your skin, it is a mircle healer.

Eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis (with which I myself suffer), are some of the most common skin conditions in the world, and their incidence is rising. Around 5-10% of the Australian population suffer from atopic dermatits and psoriasis (Syd Uni). Not only do these conditions have cosmetic implications, they have also been linked to cardiovascular disease, obesity and higher morbidity. Common treatments include corticosteroids and coal tar (byproduct of coal processing). Here’s what the medical profession themselves say about these treatments:

“With long-term use of topical steroid the skin may develop permanent stretch marks, bruising, discolouration, or thin spidery blood vessels. Topical steroids may trigger or worsen other skin disorders such as acne, rosacea and perioral dermatitis.” (www.patientinfo.com)

“In animal studies, coal tar has been shown to increase the chance of skin cancer.” (www.drugs.com)

So let’s not beat around the bush here. These treatments are NOT a good option for overall health. Enter….the miraculous healer: CALENDULA.

  • Well known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Rich in beta-carotene, flavinoids and courmarin, amongst other amazing microelements
  • Soothes, calms and heals
  • Scientifically proven to be effective in treating radiation dermatitis in cancer patients
  • In ancient cultures, in the American Civil War, and in World War 1, the flowers were applied to cuts and wounds to stop bleeding, prevent infection and speed healing

At Rubifresh natural skincare, we use calendula in our Hydrating Body Gel, along with nature’s master-hydrator Hyaluronic Acid. Customers repeatedly come to us with stories of how this product is miraculously healing their skin conditions, many of them having tried “every medical solution known to man” with no effect.

How Effective is Natural Sun Protection, really?

24 Mar

sunglasses-961385_640

In the almost four years since starting Rubifresh natural skincare, I have found that although there is a great interest in the idea of a natural sun screen, many Australians are sceptical about whether a natural product would be effective for our outdoors lifestyle in the intense Australian sun.

The evidence seems conflicting, but like so many areas of this industry, it depends on who you listen to and who you trust.

The medical industry survives on fear, evidenced by the language and tone of this Daily Mail article (23/7/14) on natural sunscreens;

“Organic enthusiasts are risking contracting skin cancer by using DIY sunscreen, doctors warn. In a worrying trend on the internet, alternative health bloggers are advising people to use coconut oil and beeswax to protect their skin because shop-bought sunscreen has ‘toxic ingredients’. Some advocates claim that ingredients such as carrot seed oil and red raspberry seed oil have a sun-protecting SPF of up to 50 – a claim dismissed as ‘absolute nonsense’ by medical experts.”

“We have no idea how safe these products are. It is like Russian roulette – you don’t really know what the ingredients do, there is no way to measure their SPF, it is just absolute nonsense and really quite dangerous. People who really are worried about the chemicals added into commercial sun screens should simply cover up or stay out of the sun.”

Unfortunately, natural products usually suffer from being swamped by the huge research funds the ‘non-natural’ cosmetics companies have access to. For this reason, it seems prudent to search for the evidence, both amongst research, and in real life situations on real peoples’ skin.

Natural sunscreens such as Red Raspberry Seed and Carrot Seed Oil work by a different mechanism than the ‘sun blockers’ we are used to, and are therefore more difficult to test by the same measures such as SPF. Basically, they work at building the body’s defence against harmful effects of sun exposure, rather than blocking the rays, per se. However, some studies have been conducted on the ‘sun blocking’ power of these ingredients, and they reveal some very interesting findings.

Let’s take a quick objective look at Red Raspberry Seed Oil, as we at Rubifresh use this as our key sun protection ingredient in our Anti-aging Moisturiser, Ultra Rich Anti-aging Moisturiser, Body Cream and Lip Balm.

The facts about Red Raspberry Seed Oil:

  • Contains 83% essential fatty acids (EFAs) which can increase cell membrane fluidity, enhance barrier function and repair, decrease trans-epidermal water loss and inflammation, and improve moisturisation and cell immunity. For these reasons, EFAs greatly soothe and remedy skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
  • Contains high concentration of Vitamin E, a potent antioxidant that protects cells from free radical damage. Free radicals affect the skin cells by causing wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and age spots. Vitamin E therefore protects the skin from these common signs of aging.
  • Contains high concentrations of polyphenols, which are potent antioxidants. Studies have shown that when applied to the skin, polyphenols protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation and enhance skin cell regeneration, improving tone and elasticity

In addition, a 2000 study published in the Journal of Food Chemistry found that the UVA and UVB protection afforded by raspberry seed oil is reportedly similar to titanium dioxide with an SPF protection factor against UVB rays of 28-50, and an SPF protection factor against UVA rays of around 8.

At Rubifresh, we always say to our customers that our Anti-aging Moisturiser, Ultra Rich Anti-aging Moisturiser, Body Cream and Lip Balm have the highest level of natural sun protection (red raspberry seed oil, in the highest recommended percentages), so the products will have enough sun protection for your everyday – in and out of buildings etc. For those times when you are right out in the Aussie sun for hours, perhaps then use a ‘sun block’ for extra protection.

However…this month we received this great testimony on our Facebook page, giving support to the idea that our moisturisers may offer an even stronger sun protection benefit:

(Jenni Cole, Rubifresh Facebook page Mar 2016)

Oh my goodness! Had a full day in the sun at the Rugby 7’s with no sunscreen – only my Rubifresh moisturiser…. After full day of sun exposure I wasn’t even slightly pink while my friend had sunburn, sunstroke and peeled for a week! Amazing!!!

To support this testimony even further, we read from Nadia on the Body Unburdened website:

I’ve been using red raspberry seed oil daily for the past few weeks with great results! It does not clog my pores whatsoever and leaves my skin super smooth. As far as sun protection, I have been using it daily on my face but will not be using it for a full day in the sun or as a full-body sunscreen due to the low UVA coverage. However, I feel that it suits my day-to-day sun protection needs just perfectly (I walk to and from work and during my lunch break, but am otherwise in the office). I will continue to use my sunscreen lotion when spending an extended period in the sun since it provides far greater UVA protection.

If you want to see for yourself, be one of the first 10 people to contact us, and we’ll send you a travel size pack of either our Anti-aging Moisturiser or Ultra Rich anti-aging Moisturiser (both with red raspberry seed oil) for free – only pay postage. Love Rubi xx

Fresh is Best

24 Nov

Just as fresh food is best for our bodies, so too are fresh ingredients best for our skin. But WHY?

It is fairly well known that the fresher we eat our food (especially vitamin and mineral packed fruit & veg), the bigger the dose of those vits & minerals our bodies receive, and the better our bodies can process them due to their superior texture, moisture and flavour. This is not only about providing the body with essential nutrients to function, but also about building the body’s own ability to maintain itself in a healthy state. A fresh, healthy diet helps build immunity, protect against aging, increase energy so we can stay active, increase joint function and organ function, and a whole host of other cool things.

Our skin is no different. A healthy outer layer not only looks great and feels great, it also helps protect our bodies from nasties entering the bloodstream…creating a cycle where healthy skin maintains its own youthfulness.

Our skin is actually designed as our first line of defence, with many built in strategies for keeping nasties out, thereby doing its part in maintaining a healthy body. However, depending on a whole host of factors (chemical load, age of skin, temperature, enzymes, size of molecule, location on the skin and more) it has been shown that up to 60% of what we put on our skin ends up in the bloodstream. The obvious advice is therefore to only choose natural skincare products & ingredients that can help build both skin and ‘whole body’ health.

The other important factor, however, is FRESHNESS. Natural ingredients used at their freshest help load up the skin with maximum skin-loving vitamins and minerals (many of which come with great scientific evidence), as well as helping to build the skin’s ability to maintain its own youthfulness.

Get some freshness and feel the difference today!

Slowing down the aging process with antioxidants

10 Feb

ImageWe’ve probably all heard of free radicals and their harmful effects on the body’s aging process, but what does it really mean and how can we prevent the damage? Free radicals are damaged cells which are released when oxygen is processed by the body in the natural process called oxidation (the same occurs when you cut an apple and oxygen reacts to turn it brown), and they cause changes in those cells they touch (eg they die – like with rotting fruit, or they might produce new cells to heal a cut). Because free radicals are missing a critical molecule, they go on a rampage to hook up and become complete. In the process, they damage the DNA of cells they touch, which creates the seed of disease. External toxins are free radical generators, speeding up the process of damage.

ANTIOXIDANTS TO THE RESCUE!!!!

Normal cell functions produce free radicals that are kept under control by antioxidants in the foods we eat, but this is not enough to combat the toxins we are exposed to from the external environment – especially if you smoke, drink, or are exposed to sun, pesticides or pollution (OK, so that would be most of us!).

THE 3 BEST WAYS TO BUILD YOUR ANTIOXIDANT STORES

1. FRESH HEALTHY FOOD

Colourful fruits and veges containing beta-carotene, Vit C or Vit E (eg purple, red, blue, orange or yellow fruits/veges) as well as foods containing zinc (oysters (yum!), poultry, red meat, beans, nuts, seafood, grains, dairy) and selenium (red meat, poultry, grains, nuts). And best not to overcook them!

2. VITAMIN/MINERAL SUPPLEMENTS

If you’ re not getting adequate from your diet, or you exercise a lot, you may need to supplement your diet with a good Zinc+C or similar. Great idea to talk to your naturopath about this.

3. ANTIOXIDANT RICH SKINCARE

Oh yes, you knew there’d be a skincare angle! Free radicals are a big factor in the premature aging process as the skin tries to battle both the environmental stresses and the free radicals it is exposed to. It is reported that your skin absorbs up to 70-80% of what you put on it (depending on the source of data), so topically applied antioxidants are really critical for your skin to build it’s resistance to environmental stresses and damage, and to supplement the antioxidant protection that good food can provide. There are several well-documented antioxidant ingredients for skincare, but at Rubifresh Natural Skincare, we use pomegranate oil and natural Vit E in almost every product. You can search for them in the ingredients on our website here.

COMING SOON…

We are feverishly developing a range of Premium Facial Treatment Oils, one of which will be an ultra rich antioxidant booster, containing green tea and grape seed, along with our usual heroes – Vit E, pomegranate. If you are keen to try, and to keep up to date with launches and specials, join our facebook page or sign up on our website.
